LAUNCH YOUR BRAND
We develop natural scientific solutions to today's biggest nutritional challenges and trends.
We understand how much Pet Parents care about their animals. Humans are devoted to nourishing their animals the same way they nourish themselves which means buying the best quality available food at an affordable price.
To maintain fitness strength and athletic ability, companion animals need to be fed the correct balance of high quality nutrients.
To reach this goal, we developed the Cargill Nutrition System (CNS) to provide precise nutrient calculations for feed formulation so we can faster deliver nutrition solutions customized to your needs.
The development of extruded pet food formulas is a science based art. The key features and benefits to succeed are:
Skin/coat
Digestion
Joint Health
Senior/Anti-Aging
Weight Loss/Control
Heart Health
Urinary Support
Calming/Motion Sickness
Omega-3
Probiotics
Cognitive/Brain
Proteins, which are made of amino acid chains, contribute to the development and maintenance of muscles and organs and are important constituents of hormones, enzymes and several secretions of your animal's body.
Lipids are necessary as a source of energy, a source of essential fatty acids (Omegas 3 and 6), for healthy skin and coat as well as for palatability. They also help vitamins A, D, E and K absorption.
Carbohydrates, starch and fibers are excellent sources of rapidly available energy (starch) and have an effect on the gastro-intestinal functions (fibers). They also contribute to the kibble's texture and structure at manufacturing.
We operate our own manufacturing plant in Strathroy Ontario where we control every step of the manufacturing process. Advanced Computer controls continuously collect detailed batch and process data, allow traceability, deliver consistency and strengthen overall feed safety. Our facility applies Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), follows strict Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) processing guidelines and is inspected annually by the agency. We employ a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) food safety system certified by annual third party audits. HACCP is a feed safety control system designed to identify where potential contamination can occur and strictly manages and monitors these points as a way of ensuring that the safest product possible is being produced. Special attention is given to the control of microorganisms, such as salmonella, in pet food; using extrusion cooking as a kill step and environmental controls such as purified HEPA filtered air to minimize the risk of contamination.
Cargill has taken starch analysis to the next level by developing the Opti-Cook® technology. Opti-Cook® is a patented process that allows for the monitoring of the cooking process immediately, accurately and efficiently. Our Opti-Cook® technology allows us to more accurately measure the cooking of our products to reduce the risk of digestive upsets in pets. This technology was not something that happened overnight. It took a lot of teamwork and expertise to develop and we can all be proud and confiden that the Opti-Cook® process is a technology that leads the industry in providing better products for our pets.
No food is released without conforming to our strict hold and release standards, in which finished foods are tested for specified standards. Samples are collected and tested for every product lot manufactured. Samples are kept for a time equal to the recommended shelf life of the product. Finally, every bag of pet food passes through a metal detector before it leaves our warehouse.
A technology that allows a continuous and accurate measurement of the cooking process is now available and reduces the risk of digestive upsets in pets.
Pet foods are cooked in different ways, but by far the most common is the extrusion process. In this process, food is heated by steam, water, and friction to cook the product to the desired level. The cooking process converts complex starch to gelatinized starch which is much easier to digest. If pet food is undercooked, starch may not be completely digested in the small intestine, resulting in starch reaching the hindgut. Once in the hindgut, residual starch is rapidly fermented by normal gut microbes, potentially causing digestive upset and loose stools.
It is important to note that different formulas may need to be cooked differently depending on the ingredient makeup to ensure that they are cooked thoroughly. The key is the amount and type of starch in the formulas. With this in mind, it goes without saying that the way we cook a senior formula is much different from the way we cook an active or performance formula. A great example of how this technology can work is in the debate about corn in pet foods. Corn itself is not a bad ingredient for dogs, but undercooked corn can be. Corn has gotten a bad perception in pet foods because corn, in a lot of cases, was not cooked properly and dogs had digestive upsets. The Opti-Cook® process aims to avoid this problem by cooking the starch in the corn to the proper, or "optimal", point.
Finally, a properly cooked formula is key to the health of our pets. Nutrient digestibility is higher in optimally cooked products than in undercooked products, but nutrients like crude protein start to decrease in digestibility if pet food is over-cooked. In many cases the main effect of improperly cooked food is a reduction in stool quality.
